About Teacups

“Teacup pigs”, “miniature pigs” or “micro-pigs” refer to a size classification rather than a type of pig. Crossed over many generations with Glouchester Old Spots, Tamworth, Kune Kune, Pygmy hogs (Porcula salvania) and Vietnamese Potbellies, teacup pigs were deliberately bred with the intent of turning a lovable, intelligent farm animal into an indoor-dwelling pet.

Teacups are, by definition, below 30 kg in weight and under 45 cm in height full-grown. They are extremely competent pets and their small size allows them to thrive in any environment a medium-sized dog would. They are healthy, hardy and, opposing contemporary belief, very clean animals.

Typically, a pig will only cover itself in mud in the absence of adequate shading or cooling and would much prefer a dip in a clean swimming pool or pond to cool off. The fact that pigs grow hair as opposed to fur is another reason to consider them as pets as this makes them hypoallergenic and suitable for individuals suffering from allergies.

Pigs are fourth in line regarding intelligence in the animal kingdom, only being surpassed by humans, the primates, dolphins and whales. This means that they require significant stimulation and will either require a lot of human interaction and attention, or require a selection of toys and activities be set up to keep them sufficiently engaged. They can be trained to use a litter box and can learn just about any trick a dog can. Pigs are motivated by loyalty, eagerness to please and, of course, food.

As a disclaimer, teacups should never be left alone with dogs.

So while teacups may be tiny, there is certainly nothing tiny about their personalities or the impact they make upon loving owners.

Teeny Tiny Pigs, founded in 2009 by Carmen Vosloo, is proud to serve as a reputable breeder of teacup pigs in South Africa.
